The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a middle-aged man, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in the state.
According to witnesses, armed men in a Toyota Sienna attacked the victim early on Thursday morning.
One of the witnesses, who pleaded anonymity, claimed that the attackers had shot the victim in the stomach before leaving his body there.
“The attack happened along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway. The gunmen, who were riding in a Toyota Sienna, shot the man in the stomach and left him for dead before fleeing. The police operatives from Ozubulu Division came the following day to remove the body,” the eyewitness recounted.
The victim’s body was retrieved after a distress call to the police, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, which confirmed the incident.
“In the early hours of January 23, 2025, police operatives attached to Ozubulu Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway and recovered the body of a yet-to-be-identified young man,” Ikenga said.
“Preliminary investigations showed the victim was shot in the stomach by suspected armed men who fled the scene,” the police spokeswoman continued.
“The command seeks assistance from members of the public to identify the victim and provide any information that could aid the ongoing investigation. The body has been deposited in the morgue, and further updates will be communicated,” he stated.
