The Ogun State Police Command has nabbed Abiodun Salami and Destiny Adeola on suspicion of involvement in cult-related activities in the Ijoko area of Sango-Ota, within the Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area.
Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer for the state Command, announced the arrest on Monday via WhatsApp, claiming that the two people were taken into custody on August 8, 2024.
Recently, there have been many cult conflicts, killings, and attacks in Sango-Ota, Ijoko, and other local government areas.
Speaking about Adeola and Salami’s arrest, Odutola said that when locals in Ijoko informed the police, the suspects and other members of the Eiye Confraternity had assembled at a certain spot.
Following the tip-off, it was reported that the Anti-Robbery Squad was sent to the area right away, leading to the arrest of Salami and Adeola, whilst others ran away.
Odutola reported that a toy silver pistol, locally crafted amulets, and possibly Indian hemp were among the items recovered at the scene.
“When they spotted the squad, they scattered in different directions. Salami and Adeola were apprehended. During questioning, Adeola admitted to being a member of the Eye Confraternity.
“He (Adeola) revealed that he was initiated into the group in 2022 at Atan-Otan. We are intensifying efforts to apprehend the other members who are still at large,” Odutola stated.
A suspected member of the group, identified only as Seun, was killed and beheaded during another cult clash in the Ijoko area in May 2024.
The deceased, who worked as a fuel attendant at a filling station in Alaroro, Ijoko, was killed in what was believed to be a reprisal.
