As mixed reactions continue to trail the rising cost of power in Nigeria, broadcasting organizations have appealed to the Federal Government to conduct a critical assessment on the challenges as it causes disruption in their daily operation.
Our correspondent, SOLA FILANI sought opinions of some media practitioners in Ibadan metropolis on challenges faced since the rise in the price of diesel and drop in power supply.
Lately, Nigerian have been entangled in the firebox of harsh economy,ranging from a sudden hike in the cost of diesel averaging more than #700, adulterated fuel causing scarcity and irregularities in its price control, epileptic power supply, down to naira devaluation with a current change rate of five hundred and ninety naira to one dollar earlier this week, have caused a pandemonium in business activities across the country including Broadcast houses.
Recently, the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has warned that the conventional media, that has been the stabilising factor in maintaining political stability, security and peace in the country is under serious threat due to the harsh economic environment.
In a bid to get reactions of several broadcast stations on how the current situation have been managed to a minimal extent, some radio stations like T-solid radio, Jamz FM and Royal root FM analyses how they have been able to subdue the challenges as it poses a threat to the system of operation.
The head of media operations in African independent television, AIT lamented the issue and emphasize on how it has caused a breakdown for many terrestrial broadcast houses so far.
She further appealed to the federal government to take necessary steps to help stabilize the economy of the country.
Meanwhile, the zonal inspector of National broadcasting commission, in Oyo state, Mr Raphael Akpan commended the efforts of media industries across the country on obligations performed dutifully despite the harsh economy as he equally sympathized with them
On his part, a business expert, Mr Philip Areho called for the rescucitation of local refineries in Nigeria to help avoid business collapse of many corporate entity in the country.
It is believed that the media is saddled with the major responsibility of entertaining, educating and informing, hence,government have been enjoined to take actions in stabilizing the country’s economy.
