Marcos Alonso’s red card against Bayern, Chelsea fans gets hot at VAR

Chelsea fans have once again expressed their annoyance to the introduction of VAR system into games in Europe after defender Marcos Alonso was red carded against Bayern Munich.

The Stamford Bridge faithfuls were all sad on Tuesday night, February 25, when Bayern Munich recorded their first ever win over the Blues in London in the Champions League. But before the end of the encounter when Bayern Munich were still leading 3-0, Robert Lewandowski was fouled by Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso.

Center referee had no choice than to blow the whistle and issued a yellow card to the Spaniard considering how Robert Lewandowski fell to the ground.

Referee Clement Turpin was later told to check the VAR system after Marcos Alonso’s foul against Lewandowski. This scenario happened in the 83rd minute in which to the surprise of all Chelsea fans, the referee issued another yellow card for Marcos Alonso thereby sending him off the pitch.

The referee was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Marcos Alonso deserved a red card in a decision which did not go well with the home fans. Painful thing for Chelsea now is that Marcos Alonso will have to miss the return leg in Germany which will hold in three weeks time.

Chelsea fans are of the views that Marcos Alonso should not have been red carded with many of them claiming that the VAR has not been good to them this season. Lampard and his men will have to raise up their game very well in the return leg for the possibility of them to progress to the last eight.

Last season, Chelsea won the Europa League title beating Arsenal in the final which was Eden Hazard’s last game for the Blues.
