A store clerk, Tawanda Chakaziva has been sentenced to nine months in prison, after he was arrested for stealing pants, skirt and shorts that he wanted to give to his girlfriend.
The court heard that on October 9 2018, Chakaziva was caught by security guards whilst attempting to steal goods worth $22.85 meant for his girlfriend, a marketing student from Great Zimbabwe.
Chakaziva was said to have placed the goods in a paper bag and hid them in his underwear. He was however apprehended by security guards.
In mitigation, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges. He told the court presided by Magistrate Tavengwa Sangster, “Your worship, I have suffered enough since I lost my job and have been thrown into the reserve pool of unemployment. I’m begging this honourable court to spare me a custodial sentence and I am more than willing to perform community service.’’
Chakaziva was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, five of which were suspended on condition of good behaviour while the remaining four were commuted to 140 hours of community service at Chiedza Primary School.
