A 33-year-old man, Ibrahim Shehu, on Friday appeared in an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing eight pairs of shoes from a mosque during prayers.
The Police charged Shehu, whose address was not provided, with stealing. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the defendant committed the offence over a period of eight months at the Okobaba Aiyetoro Central Mosque, Ebute Meta.
He said that the defendant was caught with the shoes belonging to Balogun Mukaila and Saheed Ewenla, the complainants.
The prosecutor said that the eight pairs of shoes were valued at N40,000.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section stipulates three-year jail term for stealing.
The Magistrate, Mr. Tolu Agoro, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
Agoro ordered that one of the sureties should be a leader in Arewa community.
The case was adjourned until May 24 for trial.
