A man in his mid-30s known as Baale or Radical allegedly killed himself after receiving a notice to vacate his residence for failing to pay his rent, which had raised from N35,000 to N60,000 per year.
It was gathered that Baale, who resided in a room apartment on Moshalashi Road, Egan, in the Lagos State area of Igando, passed away on Sunday night after the consumption of a toxic chemical suspected to be an insecticide.
A source revealed that the deceased had allegedly told his wife she would cry if he could not afford their rent, and the source spoke under condition of anonymity due to the delicate nature of the situation.
“He got into a fight with his wife after receiving a quit notice from his landlord for not paying the N60,000 rent increase for their one-room apartment”.
“At first, the rent was N35,000, and he had difficulty paying it because of the mounting pressure on him, he felt compelled to inform his wife that she might lose him soon”.
“Yesterday (Sunday), after returning from his hangout with friends in Iba, he called a young man (name withheld) and threatened to kill himself with the insecticide bottle he was holding. The young man lured him to stop and ran straight to his wife, following which they all called for aid”.
“Before they could return to where he was, he had already taken the substance and was given antidotes to make sure that he was stable and taken to a hospital for appropriate care”.
