A motorist was detained by members of the Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command after he stuffed fifteen kids into a Volkswagen Passat car.
Four kids were squeezed into the car trunk while Eleven others were crammed together by the driver, who had been hired to carry the kids to the beach.
This was revealed in a statement on Friday at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja by the State Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to the statement, “concerned citizens on the Lekki Ikoyi Link Bridge at about 8 p.m. on Sunday” reported seeing the car.
When the police intervened, they discovered that the driver who had been hired to drive the kids to the beach had packed 11 kids in one car and confined four of them inside the trunk.
“Preliminary investigations showed that one child had recovered after receiving medical attention after collapsing earlier in the day due to similar transportation conditions.”
According to Hundeyin, “the children had been returned to their parents by the command, and the suspects would be charged to court.”
The PPRO said, “CP Adegoke Fayoade, the State Commissioner of Police, commends Lagos State residents for always promptly alerting the authorities to suspicious persons or happenings.”
Three toddlers who were reportedly locked up in a room in Agodo-Egbe in the Ikotun area of the State were also rescued by the State Police Command.
According to information obtained, the kids, two boys and a girl were kept inside for a while by a woman named Fatimo Ganiyu, who is purported to be their grandmother.
On Wednesday, it was reported that some locals who started to wonder where they were had notified the authorities right away.
