Asue Ighodalo, the Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, has denied any involvement in the impeachment of Phillip Shaibu, the State’s former Deputy Governor.
Ighodalo called the accusation baseless, claiming it was contrived to damage his reputation.
His PR team released a statement on Monday that included this information.
In response to every remark, the statement said, “Although we would not typically join problems, it has become important to confront the recent false charges by former Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu.
“Mr. Asue Ighodalo must unambiguously clarify for the record that he had no part in the highly publicized process that resulted in Mr. Shuaibu’s impeachment and subsequent removal from office by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The assertions are completely baseless, and Mr. Ighodalo vehemently disputes having any involvement of this kind. These accusations are blatant attempts to deflect attention from the real problems at hand and unfairly damage his image.
“We urge the public and the media to regard these false statements with well-deserved skepticism,” he said, urging the public to reject the claim.
Ighodalo had previously declared that he was committed to conducting an issue-driven, distraction-free gubernatorial campaign.
Following the approval of the findings from the seven-man investigative panel that the state Chief Judge set up to look into Shaibu’s alleged misbehavior, the state House of Assembly impeached the troubled state deputy governor on April 8.
Shaibu was investigated for allegedly disclosing government secrets and committing perjury.
