The Oba Police Divisional Headquarters in the Anambra State local government area of Idemili South has been attacked by gunmen.
According to information obtained, a group of hoodlums broke into the police building early on Tuesday morning and tossed explosives at it.
The Oba Civic Centre was also attacked by the hoodlums.
It was informed by some local sources that the incident resulted in the death of an unidentified police corporal, while other victims suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Although the motive behind the attack is unknown, it is thought to have been carried out by a secessionist organisation.
In a statement on Tuesday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the public relations officer for the state police, confirmed the incident.
Ikenga claimed that the hoodlums occasionally fired shots and threw petrol bombs, setting many offices and the civic centre on fire.
Ikenga said, “The Police-led Joint Security Force comprising of the Army, Navy, Civil defence and other security agencies are currently in a joint on-slaughter operation within Oba and its environments. Following, an attack in the early hours of today 3/9/2024 on Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Center.
“The suspected armed secessionists’ group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Center.
“Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price, while the fire was put off with the help of other Police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team.”
He said that the state’s commissioner of police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the atrocity and vowed to hold those responsible for the heinous deed accountable. He called the invasion of security institutions and animosity towards security agents an attack on a nation’s soul.
