Gerard Pique might have put two bulls on horn-lock after the Barcelona defender admitted that club’s hitman Lionel Messi is greater than his fellow countryman Diego Maradona.
Messi vs Maradona debate is not new to football as there have been arguments and counter-arguments on who the best player is between the two Argentine legendary football icons.
”Maradona was a unique player in the history of this sport, who went through Barça and Napoli and will be remembered forever,” Pique said.
But in what does not come as a huge surprise, defender Pique chose his teamman as the best player, boasting the Barcelona captain is clearly unique because of his “regularity and magic.”
“If you ask me [who is the best between he and Messi], I would tell you that I go for Leo’s regularity and magic. I’ve been up close with Leo for years.”
Maradona enjoyed successful stints at both Barcelona and Napoli during his heydays, spending two seasons with the Catalans before heading to Italy where he was fortunate to win a handful of trophies.
The 53-year-old icon turned coach later led Argentine to their first-ever World Cup in 1986, thus cementing himself as a legend in the game.
Ahead of UCL Round 16 first-leg clash against Napoli on Tuesday night, February 25, at San Paulo stadium, Pique described Maradona as a stellar star of his generation.
He, however, said Messi is a better player having played with the 32-year-old for 13 years at Barcelona.
