The flooding of Maiduguri Zoo, also known as Sanda Kyarimi Park, which is situated in the city core, has caused alarm among the residents.
According to information obtained, the park which is next to a waterway has been flooded by water.
The flood, which hit major centres in the city around one in the morning on Tuesday, wiped out many families from neighbourhoods around Lagos Street, Modugari, Gwange, Monday Market, and a few other locations.
A resident of Maiduguri, Kabiri Sani, stated that the zoo was flooded this morning and that she was certain that the animals would escape.
“Early this morning, I left Wulari to Polo, while passing through the zoo area, with the water level I saw, I was shocked, and I began to fear because I know the calibre of wild animals in that zoo” he claimed.
Salamatu Mohammed, another Gwange resident, claimed that she and her family had already been forced to flee their home after learning that the zoo was already flooded.
He said, “I left immediately I was able to rescue my properties and myself. I cannot stay in that area because I am sure that animals are currently outside.”
Nonetheless, a photo that has been making the rounds on Facebook purports to depict an ostrich that fled the zoo on the street near Borno ICAN’s office.
