A dynamite explosion rocked the Action People’s Party secretariat along the GRA axis of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, on Monday morning.
Reports indicated that the incident happened at precisely 1am in the morning.
The attackers allegedly threw substances they thought to be dynamite into the secretariat building, shattering windows and doors and damaging other party property.
This occurred amid rumours that Siminalayi Fubara, the state governor, was about to join his supporters in the APP in response to the Peoples Democratic Party being reportedly hijacked by his predecessor and estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike, in the state.
There were claims that some party leaders were seen discussing the development while the building’s ceiling and fixtures were also demolished.
A party official claimed the incident was politically driven, but he declined to disclose himself.
He stated, “Yes, I’m a member of the APP. I was informed of the attack at about 3 am today.
“This is politically-motivated and there is no two ways about it. They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits.”
When contacted, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesman for the state police command, stated she was not yet aware of the incident but that she would look into it.
