The accusations of brutality that surfaced during a recent sting operation in Akure, Ondo State, have been refuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, claimed in a statement released on Sunday that the video evidence that seemed to demonstrate violence committed by its operatives was “stage-managed” and “false.”
In a simultaneous raid on two clubs in Akure on Saturday, Oyewale stated that the commission had detained 127 alleged internet fraudsters; however, he denied using tear gas or abusing any of the suspects.
Oyewale claims that the EFCC operatives handled it professionally and that the CCTV equipment at the location was not damaged.
According to Oyewale, the commission has started profiling the suspects and would press appropriate charges against them.
The EFCC released a statement in response to a video that went viral and featured two women with lacerated bodies who claimed that EFCC operatives had abused them during the raid.
Oyewale’s words: “The Commission wants the public to discountenance the trending video as it may have been stage-managed to achieve motives that are unclear.
“The Commission will subject this video to forensic analysis to establish its falsehood and prepare a case against purveyors of this distasteful stunt.
“The Commission wishes to state that no suspect was assaulted, brutalised or subjected to any dehumanizing treatment during the Saturday operation.
“It is also false that tear gas was fired at the crime scene. Our personnel do not use tear gas during sting operations.
