Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, is a cross-dresser who was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for currency mutilation and abuse of naira notes.
In a phone conversation on Thursday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that the transvestite had been taken into custody in Lagos on Wednesday evening.
According to the anti-graft agency officer, “He (Bobrisky) was arrested Wednesday night in Lagos. “He will face charges in court after being detained at our Lagos Office.”
Bobrisky has been in the news for a number of contentious reasons, one of them being that on March 25, 2024, she won the “Best Dressed Female” Award at a movie premiere, which infuriated other celebrities.
Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi responded to the social outcry by saying that there is no legal provision advocating the arrest of crossdressers in Nigeria.
“It is not mentioned anywhere that cross-dressing is illegal in Nigeria,” he stated on April 2, 2024, during the Politics Today show on Channels Television. “Let’s be realistic: crossdressing is not currently illegal in Nigeria because you cannot arrest someone you wish to punish without solid proof.
The accusation against some of them is that they are into something else; this is where the issue is. They enjoy cross-dressing. Enough evidence that they are genuinely interested in “that” is required. Adejobi emphasized that all of those offenses are legitimate in Nigeria and subject to legal consequences.
