The Police and other security agencies on Wednesday night reportedly killed about five gunmen who allegedly attacked a police station in the state.
Sources in the area said the gunmen attacked the Ishieke Police Station in Ishieke, a suburb of Abakaliki, capital of the State.
Following their arrival, the gunmen allegedly engaged the on-duty police officers in a protracted gunfight.
Sources claim that at around 9pm, there was a lot of shootings, which scared the residents into hiding.
Tony Nwori, one of them, claimed that the gunmen entered the police station and began intermittently firing into the air.
He said the attackers engaged in a gun war with the policemen in front of the station for over 30 minutes, until reinforcements from other security agencies came.
Later, more security personnel, including soldiers, became aware of the situation and arrived in large numbers to apprehend the gunmen.
While firing intermittently into the air, the gunmen withdrew along the Nwiboko Obodo route, passing through the Odomoke Ishieke market.
However, the security guards gave them a fierce chase and neutralizing them.
