The Ogun State Police command has verified the apprehension of Okekenu Gbadebo, who is accused of allegedly punching Adebayo Gbenro, a 37-year-old relative, in the Ijemo-Agbadu neighborhood of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
SP Omolola Odutola, the command spokeswoman, verified the incident in Abeokuta and stated that the culprit was taken into custody not long after the police station received a report about it.
It was reliably learnt that the event occurred about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday when a disagreement broke out between the deceased and Gbadebo while making arrangements for their late father’s funeral ceremony at their family house in Ìjemò-Agbadu.
According to an eyewitness, once the disagreement got heated, Gbadebo hit the deceased in the chest.
Additionally, the deceased man slumped soon after receiving a blow to the chest, according to information provided to the police by his sister, Bose Ajani.
The family members who had assembled for the burial celebration, scheduled for the following day, were reportedly driven into a state of confusion and hysteria by the tragedy.
“The family members convened to get ready for their father’s last funeral, which was set to happen on Sunday. However, there was a disagreement between Gbadebo and Gbenro while the plans were being made.
Nobody anticipated that it would turn into a brawl. The abrupt blow on Gbenro’s chest from Gbadebo was surprising. The punch caused Gbenro to instantly collapse. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead by the on-call physician, the police officer said.
“The victim and suspect are relatives,” she declared. They went to their family’s Abeokuta home for a funeral. A dispute broke out between the two during the burial preparations. The deceased apparently collapsed right after Gbadebo struck him in the chest.
“He was taken to Ijaye General Hospital and later declared dead. The deceased has been placed in the hospital mortuary in order to undergo postmortem analysis. We have detained the suspect in the interim, and the State Criminal Investigation Department will take over the matter for a comprehensive investigation.
