The anticipated meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government was originally supposed to take place on Monday (Today), but it has been postponed.
The ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, reportedly acknowledged on Channels Television on Monday that the meeting, which the Minister of Education had earlier planned on Friday, will not take place.
It was announced that the meeting will now take place on Wednesday, August 28, but no explanation was provided for the postponement.
Public university lecturers threatened to go on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to uphold the 2009 renegotiated agreement, following resolutions made at the union’s national executive council meeting held at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024. ASUU’s demands include welfare improvements, university funding, and stopping the university proliferation across the country.
