The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), specifically the Tin-Can Island Command, has intercepted a shipment of arms and ammunition believed to have been smuggled into the country by criminal elements.
A source within the service said that other items recovered were military camouflage, and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
He added that the arms recovered were automatic single-barrel rifles and pump action guns.
Though details of the interception are still sketchy, the recoveries were made during an inspection of consignments imported into the country.
However, the source could not confirm if any arrests were made.
This interception is coming barely eight months after the Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, told journalists that two suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal importation of 31 arms of various types at Tin-Can and Multi-Purpose Terminals (PTML) ports in Lagos.
