An American national has been arrested and detained by the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command of the Nigeria Police for allegedly assaulting a towing service official at the airport.
The man, Breedlove Shawn, an American, was said to have been accosted by airport officials for allegedly parking at a restricted area of the airport on Wednesday.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the towing Company, Billafary Towing Service Limited, Lamidi Falekulo, said Shawn broke his car key in the ear of one of his workers.
According to him, the victim was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where he was operated on.
Falekulo narrated the ordeal of his staff on the sidelines of the stakeholders’ forum organised by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s SERVICOM unit.
“As they were struggling, I didn’t know how he managed to break the key in the worker’s ear. The Airport Police Command detained him and our staff was taken to LASUTH where they operated on him to remove the key,” he said.
The Divisional Police Officer, International Airport, Mr Danjuma Garba, who confirmed the incident, said the man would be charged with assault and “inflicting grievous bodily injury” on a man.
The Regional Manager, South-West and MMIA Manager of FAAN, Mrs Victoria Shin’Aba, said the agency had constituted a task force to improve security and safety at airports.
