The governor of Sokoto State, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, has mandated the prompt removal of a landfill from the area surrounding the Central Market, which was completely destroyed by fire on Monday.
The order was issued by the governor during his visit to the market on Monday to conduct an immediate situational analysis.
The governor asked that all debris in the environment be removed within three weeks of yesterday, in a message he shared on social media.
He stated, “Earlier, I was in the Sokoto State Central Market, where approximately 180 stalls were destroyed by a fire that started on Monday morning.
“I was taken aback by their unwillingness to lead me to the trash place. I did, however, take the initiative to look into the matter after hearing others mention it. The fact that part of the market has been turned into a landfill is depressing.
“We are all concerned about this issue, even though the Commissioner for Lands and Housing has made an effort to defend the market leaders.” I want to underline that the business community is also accountable for the garbage’s location; it did not just appear.
“I have given the order that the particular market area would be closed if the trash is not removed within three weeks.
“The buildup of such debris may even be connected to the start of the fire and provide hazards to the neighborhood. We will not tolerate any behavior that puts our people’s safety at danger.
“There is no denying that keeping our surroundings clean is a core component of our beliefs.”
