Sixteen people lost their lives on Tuesday night when a commercial bus on the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road crashed into the fence of Maduka University in Ekwegbe.
The eighteen-seater bus caught fire as soon as it struck the fence, scorching sixteen of the passengers to death.
Two of the passengers, made it out alive and are now being treated in a hospital.
Tuesday night, sixteen people were killed when a commercial bus on the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road crashed into the fence of Maduka University in Ekwegbe.
The command in a statement by Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesman said: “The accident involved an 18-seater white-coloured Toyota Hummer bus with Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA with an inscription “Masha Allah”, and said to be going at high speed; lost control and plunged onto the fence of Maduka University along the road.
According to a preliminary investigation, sixteen people were inside the car when it tragically caught fire and burned to the ground. However, police officers, soldiers, and well-meaning civilians who arrived to the scene right after managed to save two of the passengers and transport them to the hospital for medical assistance.
The investigation showed that the car was traveling from the Enugu axis of the road towards Nsukka while carrying edible veggies, other food items, and the passengers’ luggage.
Nevertheless, the precise point of departure and ultimate destination of the car remained unknown.
Nevertheless, the Igbo-Etiti Police Division has located and recovered their belongings.
